Home sweet home

There’s no place like home, especially now the chilly winter nights are drawing ever closer. So no-one can blame you for wanting to keep your own little castle as comfy and as comfortable as possible.
Why not pick up some tips from Answers ‘Home and Garden’ community, where users can get advice on anything from how to wash fake fur cushions to how to look after house plants.
An essential for a cosy winter palace is the all important duvet, so you want to make sure you choose the best one possible. Javber26 was on hand to advise black_dahlia on what to look for when buying a duvet:
‘Duvet inners made from natural fibres such as wool, feathers and down offer the best sleep. When you sleep, over a litre of water evaporates from your body. Synthetic duvet inners trap this moisture causing you to wake hot and clammy during the night.’
Along with duvets, radiators are also important for keeping you warm and comfortable.
Heat engineer Stitched up gave KB some great suggestions on how to bleed her radiators, recommending she call upon a plumber first to take a look at the problem:
‘You are in serious need of a plumber to answer this. Any heating system can be bled with the system running, some systems (not combi-boilers or system boilers) will draw air in if the vent pipe is too close to the pump, some systems will not even fill if the pump is not on.’
But keeping your home comfortable isn’t just about keeping it warm, it’s also about keeping it clean. Should you use a bagless or bagged vacuum cleaner to clean the carpet?
Then there are the inevitable spillages and stains which blight every home. If you’re daring enough to have a cream or white sofa in your living room, then what’s the best way to clean your soiled pride and joy without running it forever?
Once you’ve got your palace sparkling clean and lovely and warm, don’t forget to add those finishing decorative touches to bring out your personality. Perhaps you’ve got some house plants and you want to know how to take care of them? Jen M has the answer: ‘a plant really needs four things to survive: sunlight, water/fertilizer, air circulation and soil.’
Or maybe you’re planning to brave the frost this year to go out into the garden. If so, pansies and wallflowers are the best bet for adorning your outdoor space at this time of year.
It might be cold, wet, dark and miserable outside, but that’s all the more reason to use Answers for ideas to make your home as beautiful, bright, warm and contented as possible during the winter months.
