“What are the greatest inventions of the past 100 years and why?”

— by Yahoo! UK & Ireland Answers team

Whether ‘the city of love’ or ‘the city of lights’, Paris is a metropolis with multiple facets and flourishes. Get a Best Answer to our question and you could win a weekend for two in the city.

Paris has always been famed for being a centre for education and research, as well as a cultural and artistic hub. Although the days of Pasteur, the Lumière brothers or Gustave Eiffel are now long gone, the city continues to be renowned for state-of-the-art technology and science.

Whether cinematography was invented in Paris or not, there are certainly many internationally famous landmarks that made the city what it is today: one of the most visited places in the world. If you’ve ever been there, you probably remember one of the unmistakable Parisian icons: the 12th century cathedral Notre Dame de Paris, the 19th century Eiffel Tower, the Napoleonic Arc de Triomphe and of course one of the most visited museum on Earth, The Louvre and its distinctive glass Pyramids. Architectural feat, work of art? You could be the judge.

In 1908, Dr. Lee De Forest, the father of wireless transmission, ran experiments from the top of the Eiffel Tower by broadcasting recorded music. Mobile phones have become a vital element of our day-to-day lives and while they used to be just telephones, now they’ve become GPS devices, cameras, music and video players and more.

This month, a new games portal called 100% Mobile has launched on O2 in the UK. On top of the latest games reviews, you can pay-per-play, rent a game for a day or even use the “Try Before You Buy” option to download a limited free trial version of games. There’s everything from games  hows such as Deal or No Deal and Catchphrase to games for gamers such as Streetfighter and Pacman. For more info, visit the site.

So, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first wireless transmission from the Eiffel Tower, Answers has teamed up with O2 100% Mobile to give you a chance to visit the city of lights with the person of your choice for an amazing all-inclusive weekend.

For a chance to go to Paris this winter, simply answer our question on the greatest innovations of the past 100 years. If you get the Best Answer, you’ll have the opportunity to see Mona Lisa’s smile for real and visit the spot where Dr. Lee De Forest first ran his experiments!

  4. I believe that the I-pod has now eclipsed the television, as the most important invention of the last 100 years. Apple’s inspired invention has personalised music to such a degree that one can now understand almost any person just by looking at their mp3 player and the records in their library. It has turned books, films and television shows into truly portable media. It has also enhanced such spheres as personal photography, fitness, telecomunications and the internet. The I-pod is a true revelation, perhaps not original within itself, but it has enhanced the experiences and lives of so many by pushing the boundaries and developing what we already have to a state of near perfection.

  5. I think the World Wide Web is the greatest invention of the past 100 years because its potential is HUGE. Knowledge is for sharing and knowledge is also power! Positive power that is, eg curing diseases or ending world poverty and deprivation

  9. i believe the most important invention is a common language imagine where we would be without it. without language nothing else would have been invented because there would have been no means of passing the information on.
some people might say that language was not “invented” but somebody had to speak it first then teach it to othes in the same way we learn from others when we are born. imagine how freaky it would be if we could talk as soon as we were born. it wasnt around before ie cavemen just grunted so it couldnt have been discovered. imagine a world with out it

  10. The most important invention over the last 100 years must be the microchip. It is testament to the immense power of tiny things. Smaller than a penny, the chip, or integrated circuit, is quite literally the brain, heart and nervous system of every digital device on the planet. It powers computers, mobile phones, washer machines, cars and satellites. They are used in the design of space stations, they guide planes safely in for a landing, they make it possible for us to watch hundreds of TV channels (as well as power the remote control too), and enable teenagers every day to log on to the Internet and chat with somebody half a world away. Since the widespread introduction of the microchip in the early 1970s, there have been more medical, mathematic and scientific breakthroughs that in any other period of time, due in large part to the awesome computing power this thin silicone wafer has brought us.

The microchip’s main accomplishment is ushering us into the era of personal computing, one that would have seemed inconceivable just 30 years ago. Without the chip, most every mechanism that modern society has come to rely on – from jumbo jets to stereo Hi-Fis – would come to a grinding halt. With tens of billions of chips in the world running most every imaginable machine, many scholars now rank the development of the microchip as one of humankind’s greatest achievements. Without the almighty chip, we’d need an extra garage to store our computer, printer and fax machine; scientists would be decades behind on their research for life-threatening diseases and our homes would be devoid of such must-have modern conveniences as DVD players and microwave ovens. This being the case, where would I store my bike!

  11. The greatest invention of recent times must surely be photography, which was a gift of France in 1839. But it predates the 100 years so I will choose photolithography and printed circuits, which are just one spin off of photography and which have made the www possible.

  16. One of the greatest inventions that has been in the last 20 year is the invention of computers it is very useful and virtually been used every where, schools, offices, hospitals banks at home name it. It is most importantly useful for mothers that work from their homes and keeps them informed about what is going on in the world even without putting on your television. Though everything comes with its own disadvantage but the advantage of having a computer, laptop around you cannot be over emphasied. cheers
