Answers outage

Hey everyone,

As many of you will have noticed, this week we underwent some maintenance work that caused both Answers to be unavailable and some unexpected behaviour when it returned. This formed part of essential engineering work that needed to be completed and we’re happy to be able to confirm this is now over.

We are aware, however, that during the time the site was unavailable we caused frustration and disappointment to many of you, our most committed and loyal Answers contributors. So we want to say sorry for the inconvenience we caused.

We have seen many of your comments about the maintenance work and we are happy to clarify that this will not affect any Top Contributor badges, Leaderboards or any other features. We would also like to assure you we only undergo this kind of work when it is truly necessary and intend to minimise any occurrences of this kind in the future.

Many thanks for your patience and understanding on this,

– Yahoo! Answers team

  1. As a devoted user of Yahoo! Answers, I can say that I personally accept Yahoo!’s apology. Although there was a one day hiatus, I was able to get back to answering in the comedy section immediately – I have been able to work quite efficiently around the website faults recently.

All websites have errors occassionally, I’m rather impressed you guys managed to fix it so quickly and effectively. Lister left a bath running once – for 9 years – and it completely destroyed our computer! We still haven’t got Holly back online!

At the end of the day it wasn’t your fault. And thank you Yahoo! Answers team for informing me of when the website was fixed.

  6. wow.

people should stfu and be grateful it’s even here in the first place. do they want a working site that has to go down once in a while or a site that’s running 24/7 and constantly breaks?

  8. So can I have 2 points back, since I got two violation notices for a single deleted answer that day?

  9. I would like to know, since the maintenance work, why i am now not receiving email to inform me of any best answers and when someone leaves a comment on my 360 page. It’s quite ironic as when you do maintenance work we get untold amount of email about the same best answer but now we get nothing. I like to thank people for best answers and cannot do this if i am not receiving BA emails. Can you sort this out please as i don’t want to have to go over all my old answers to check. Cheers.

  14. Hey, no worries! It was about time I spent a whole day away from my computer – and I know many others on here could do with it too!

Thanks for providing us with a great free service, just shows how many of us have come to depend on it!

Keep up the good work chaps :)

  20. I notice that many of the photo questions are gone (down to 3 pages from 7 or more) and that the real TC and best answer guy PhotoAce, with more than 4000 best answers has been supplanted by someone with only 700+ answers.

    What gives?

  21. I cant believe people would complain! Its just one of those things and we expect maintainence occasionally. I agree, no need for apologies. After all, wouldnt there be lots of complaints if answers didnt work because of LACK of maintenance :-D

  25. I am still haveing an awful lot of trouble accessing my emails. It has taken me 56 minutes this morning to access 5 emails and over half an hour to get into sending you this message.
By the time I have finished typing an email them look at the screen only half of it has appeared and I have to wait (it seems ages) for the rest of the message to appear.
Can you please help me as it is so frustrating
    Thank you

  26. I agree with Peter.

I see no changes in the site’s appearance. What actually has changed?

I like this site and appreciate that maintenance work is required to keep it up and running smoothly. To those who complained get a life!! A lot of hard work was needed to even bring this here for you to enjoy. You should learn to be grateful and respect other people.

Just so that you know I wasn’t one of those who complained either, although as far as I’m concerned your apology is accepted.

  27. I don’t beleive your ‘sorry’ at all, or show any form of genuine remorse. How can you? You don’t know me personally or have ever met me. Stop being so patronising.

  29. This planned maintenance did not bring in new features, but was necessary to ensure Answers will run smoother in the future. Additionally, apologies for the multiple notifications for Best Answers some of you have bee receiving. This issue has now been fixed too.

  30. Thank you for the apology but it is not necessary we all know that you have to carry out maintenance checks and updates etc. It is just making sure the wheels and cogs are run smoothly for all the people who use Yahoo Answers.

  34. You do sooo well to keep this site running smoothly almost all of the time. I cannot fathom the electronic wizardry it must require to do this amazing feat, day in and day out. The mind boggles.

What I wish you would do is migrate all the points from my “Chris Computer” Yahoo! Answers account to my current account. I was at Level Six when we were switched from Verizon to FairPoint Communications here in South Portland, Maine, U.S.A., and when that happened I lost all my points and old (original) Yahoo! Answers account and had to begin all over again. I believe in miracles, so perhaps a member of the Yahoo! Team will see this request and make it happen for me. I believe I am at Level Two now, but I was at Level Six before. Perhaps I am now closer to Level Seven that I thought I was. I am 65, and I worked hard for all those Level Six points. I also really miss the over 75 Contacts I had made with that original “Chris Computer” account. Maybe the gods will favour me and migrate all my old points to the account I presently use to answer questions here on Yahoo! Answers. I am a man of faith. I believe in miracles. – Chris ~ South Portland, Maine, U.S.A.

  36. Not a problem being out of service for maintenance occasionally. I hope that Answers takes the opportunity to make the UK&Ireland Only Answers filter work. Input from the USA is interesting sometimes but can often be annoying or dangerous when it’s given to UK questions about electricity, motoring or the Law.

  39. Hello. I’m not much of a techie, but I would find it really interesting to understand a bit more about the technicalities of exactly how these things happen and why it should be that routine maintenance work should cause these problems. But I guess that’s all top secret, right? I’m sure this site must be pretty complicated underneath the deceptively simple facade. Wishing you all the best for the days ahead.

  42. Well, i know that maintenance on a site like this is required…but a warning that i was wasting my time answering questions only to not have my answer published, or get the points, would have been nice

  43. How about the issue of you not replying to ANY emails you are sent regarding abuse? You just remove answers as soon as they’re reported and your “appeal” option is redundant. I know several members including myself that have sent you several repeat emails and over not days or weeks, but MONTHS not ONE has had ONE response from you. Is this a joke? Are we talking to a yahoobot? Does anybody on “YahooAnswers” actually give a damn about answers on Yahoo???

Comment posted on April 19th, 2009 at 5:15 am by yowsa
  44. Several top best answerers have been forced to keep their Q&A private which makes the whole purpose of sharing knowledge on yahoo an ass, because of abuse of the report function and your complete failure to respond to appeals. Oh, downtime for less than a day! Oh how will we all cope! Like that is what we are all p##sed off about regarding your so called service. Why don’t you address the real issue, instead of performing damage limitation nonsenses of apologies like this one.

Comment posted on April 19th, 2009 at 5:21 am by yowsa
  45. Help “us” improve and tell “us” what you think? Like there is a human being actually doing something to provide customer service?? Tell me, just how many thousands of customer service reps do you have to cater for yahoo answers customer care? How often do the “thousands” of assigned reps actually check the mail sent to them and do they even look at half of them?? Pathetic.

just shut up and get over it, it’s hard to run a website this big without it crashing, so i’d like to see you run yahoo answers better.

  51. I don’t know whether it was a preventive or breakdown maintenance that you have done. In case of carrying out any preventive maintenance, in future, I would appreciate if you could give advance notice to the users of Y/A.

  52. The frustrating problem is that Yahoo never notified anyone until after the event.

Whatever you maintained, the spell checker on the UK and Ireland site is still very irritatingly in English US.
