Optimise your questions
It happens sometimes. You post a question and get no answer or you just can’t find that ‘best answer’. Here’s a quick reminder of how you can save points while getting the best out of your questions:
- Once your question is open for business, you can always add details. Just hover your mouse over the Edit (pencil icon) in the action bar below the question to add details.
- Instead of asking the same question again, why not to give the community more time to answer? You have the option to extend the expiration of your question by 4 days- plenty of time to increase your chance at getting the answer you are looking for. Since your question is initially given four days to be resolved, extending it means 8 days to get an answer. At the end of the 8 days, you will either have to pick a best answer or put your question up for voting. You will not be able to extend it any further. To extend the open period for your question, hover your mouse over the ‘edit’ section and select Extend Expiration from the option menu.

- If your question does not get an answer and expires, it will disappear. If this happens, you can try looking through answers for a similar question that was resolved or you can post your question again. However, think before asking again: did you give enough details? Was the question written clearly? Try to give as many hints as possible to your potential answerers!
- And finally, a tip for a super question: pick the best answer. It’s a great way to reward that person who took some time to give you a brilliant answer to your question… Who doesn’t love a bit of an ego boost from time to time

“If your question does not get an answer, it will disappear. If this happens, you will recover the 5 points, and you can post it again.”
If this is true, then this has been a recent change, and thus, the Points and Levels Points Table should be edited to reflect this change.

” … extending it means seven days to get an answer.”
It has previously been 8 days, or 192 hours of “Open” time for an “Extended” Question. Has this been changed?
“If your question does not get an answer, it will disappear. If this happens, you will recover the 5 points, and you can post it again.”
Has this really been changed? According to the Scoring System, the only way the 5 points for asking a Q is if there are Answers, it goes to community vote, and No Best Answer wins the vote.
???
Erratum:
” … for asking a Q is if there are Answers … ”
should read:
” … for asking a Q is returned is if there are Answers … “
I was under the impression that if your question expires without ANY answers… that it will disappear, but no points will be refunded.
This would encourage a user to be more detailed and precise when asking .
(It would also discourage users from making up impossible_to_answer_questions…LOL)
If the question gets voted/resolved with the majority vote being = “No Best Answer”… it will also disappear, and the user will be refunded the 5 points. Then the asker should ask again, perhaps worded differently and/or re-categorized.
Hey guys,
Unless you’ve changed things a bit, the Extended period for a question is EIGHT days, not seven, and there is NO POINTS REFUND FOR EXPIRED QUESTIONS. Only if No Best Answer wins the vote, the 5 points are given back to the Asker, even if the Question is deleted in either case.
Could you clarify if you’ve made changes to the system or just some mistakes in the blog?
Thanks!
Cali

Hi Y!ATUK
Looks like I missed the amended error, and I had a comment ready as well…Oh well maybe next time.
And btw I still can’t make a comment in your ‘Servicing the Site’ blog, any chance of fixing it
