David Beckham needs no introduction.  He is one of the most iconic athletes and decorated football players of all-time. He is the second most capped England player in history, scoring in three FIFA World Cups.  However, David’s name now stretches beyond just football –in recent years, his name has also become synonymous with style, fashion, and recently, through his work as UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, he has become known as a key advocate of charity work.

Here at Yahoo! we are honoured to have David as our Global Ambassador working with Yahoo! 1. Im from Southampton, love the team also. You have played us a few times in the past and I was wondering what your views are about the club and also what you think of our hero, Matt Le Tissier?

  2. Following comments about how the England team were ‘tired’, do you think you or any footballer are actually worth the incredible amounts of money you are paid, especially considering how much people who actually put their lives on the line such as soldiers in Afghanistan, Firemen and others receive and how tired they get. I appreciate you could say that market forces dictate salaries but the modern game is priced beyond many fans. Shouldn’t these high salaries also command a degree of professionalism that means we don’t see fouls, people lashing back etc.

  5. Hi David,

What I would like to have an answer to, a question that so many people around the world would love to hear is “how would you rate the feeling of scoring a goal in a so important game, such as Champions League or a match winning for your country?”

Let me adress that I, now 30 years of age always dreamt of being a footballer and score the winning goal in the World Cup final – and since im from Sweden the chance of even getting the team there would be more of a task! ;) However we tend to go through life in achieving goals (as in life goals) and get to that higher state of conciousness – I mean…scoring a goal in front of so many people, getting the recognition, and just the shere extasy the second after a goal has hit the net must beat the hardest mind-drug ever made…how IS that feeling if it can be expressed by words??? To score those goals, to have your team win because of you…

I guess I have to score my own goals in my own way to achieve the kind of same state, but for the next life im on here…im gonna get onto the pitch at 2 years old n get training!!! Im gonna get that goal! :)

    All the best,

    Sebastian

  6. David,

After this world cup, a lot of the players are probably in bad spirits and in need of a good laugh. If you could take the team out for a day to cheer them up, where would you go?

    Cheers,

  12. It seems funny that the same people who were behind the structure of Acdemies, also the best way forward to bring young players through the F.A. way. The future of our football now looks bleak, are these not the same experts, that are saying the way we have now is not good enough.
Shouldn’t these people be asked to leave there post or resign, and bring in a complete new group of young coaches, be put in place, like yourself, and perhaps when you finished with playing, this would be a good place to start, don’t you think, what’s your feeling with the way it is all set up ?

  23. David,

As you know England has continuously fizzled out in the World Cup. This year I had higher expectations because of the style of attacking football they showed in qualifications. However once the finals began we saw a completely different England squad. They did not look like they were having fun, or for that matter did not even appear like they wanted to be there at all. England looked slow defensively (especially up the middle), unimaginative on the attack, lazy by not moving off or to the ball and using open spaces, and frankly old and tired. Rooney especially appeared completely uninterested.

That being said, what do you feel needs to be done to turn this around and create a mentality and style for England to succeed in the coming years? And, what would be the key area to address in order to develop better (stronger, faster, smarter, and hungrier) players in England?

    Thanks!

Walcott, Lennon, Dawson and Hart seem great players to me, and with the experienced fighters around them – like yourself, Gerrard and Owen – do you think that they can make the semifinal at least at the next Europian Championship?

  33. over the years the most outstanding players (for me) were able to transfer their obvious attachment for their club to their country as a sort of natural progression, and seemed to have that X factor of extra passion when playing for Country. In addition to yourself and ManU,Keegan Newcastle,JHaynes Fulham,Mathews Blackpool,Billy Wright Wolves etc
Could the FA work closer with schools to instill that that esteme (at all skills levels) so that all will reach their potential the best emerge to go further and we might get more of them if they have a greater felling of belonging.
My technical skills ? supported 1962/63 Spurs now a 64 year old London Bus Driver
Yes I know that doesn’t make me a good coach (probably over qualified to be an MP)

  36. Why do you think our national team never gets to the final of world cup or Euro’s, is it because of our style of football lack of pride for playing for England, too many foreign players in our leagues, the only passionate player I have seen since Gazza was you I think this lifts players when they are proud to wear the England shirt. Dont like to down our current players but they do seem to lack passion.

  61. Hi David, how do you feel about the media hype that surrounds Englands participation in the big tournaments, and the subsequent media rush to tear the team and coaching staff to shreds when something goes wrong? The media seem to love building up everyones hopes, (understandable, i suppose, no point going if you dont believe you have a chance), but surely its too much when England then expect and demand nothing less than outright victory? eg Take Scotland fans, they dont expect or demand victory but they go with hope, (of course they would love to win!), and the fans have fun and enjoy whatever tournament they are lucky enough to actually qualify for! its just a shame the media put too much pressure on the England team.

as you approach your destiny with a record amount of English caps, gained I might say with a 20 match run of 10 minute cameos, what are your thoughts on previous English captains who laboured long and hard for 90 mins per cap? Captains such as Billy Wright 105caps gained some would say because of his fine blonde hair and marriage to a pop star, or that chancer Bobby Moore, a world cup fluker capped only by Ramsey because of his good looks and ability to appear in TV adverts to sell merchandise. Please let us know your thought; more than one is to much to hope for. Everyone is asking you about football and other things but my question is are you a christian. Do you have Christ in your family, career as footballer and businessman? I don’t know you personally but I think you are a good man, husband, father and a footballer. My question is have you made Christ number one in your life? The English team can be good if they have Christ and know that you are all equal. this world cup I saw that there was no fear in the team but the reason you lost was because you felt you could do it alone. I´ve heard that there´s two most important things in junior years to develope to become a professional football player: “game-eye” and technique. What do You think of that statement?

Greetings from Finland! Nice to see You already keeping uppies by YouTube after the injury ;-)

  79. Hi to a true legend at Manchester United and a fantastic player. :)

World Cup for England was a disaster… with all the hopes for England winning the cup went down the drain.
One question I would like to ask is.. If you took over England…what new motivation would you thrive the players to win the world cup in the next four years or even the euro cup in 2012?
How would you make England proud?

  89. Hi David
Just wondered what you would do to enhance the England team going forward and how we can reduce the media pressure the squad have on their shoulders along with the enormous expectation from the England fans. You seem to be able to cope with this constant intrusion – but clearly the pressure was too much for the team and they just did not perform. What can be done to prepare them in the future. Without doubt we have many talented players – although I truly believe you were sorely missed on the pitch. Looking to the future – you may be able to play a vital role in sorting their pshycie out – but clearly something needs to change.

    Best wishes

Looking back now do you think that experience helped you achieve what you wanted to acheive or was it simply a spurr to prove people wrong? Do you wonder if your career would have been different if that incident had never hapened?

  93. Hi David,
With your experience playing for LA Galaxy, how do you feel the campaign to make football the national sport in the US is going? Have there been any before and after spectator surveys done and what do you think it will take for football to achieve the status enjoyed by baseball there? I wish the US team had progressed further in the Cup just to hear Letterman eat his uneducated words! (BTW – bad tackle but beautiful goal in the game against Sydney here 3 years ago! – and was I the only person who noticed you were playing with only 9 men at one stage?) – Heather

  107. David,

I’m sure you would agree that England’s performance at the World Cup was woeful. But it seems to me with all the inquests, post-mortems and analysis, nobody is pinpointing the real problem: surely that, unlike you, English players aren’t playing club football abroad. While we try to deal with the massive long-term problems of poor coaching and development, principally why we’re not instilling enough of a technique and possession football mentality into our kids, don’t you agree that an England team made up of players playing outside of England would stand so much of a better chance at a tournament, even if they could only join a mid-table Spanish, Italian or German club? Would you take it upon yourself, PLEASE, firstly to get this debate started — because no one in the English media seems to be, and secondly, to use your experience and wisdom to get the likes of Rodwell, Wilshere, Gibbs, Walcott etc OUT of the inhibiting, damaging, and technically inferior Premier League? To me, David, this is perilously important, and will decide the future of the England team.

I’d like to get your thoughts on goal-line technology. Do you think that it would ruin the beautiful game or take it up to another level? Although England and one or two other teams would have benfited from it in South Africa, do you feel that we are moving ever closer to a more ‘unnatural’ form of football, with the various rule changes that are occuring over the years?

  128. Hi David,
I would interested to get your view of technology in the context of the game of football. You are currently experiencing the power of technology brought about by Cisco Telepresence and I am sure you will agree it’s an amazing experience that has the power to positively change the way people interact across the globe. Surely there is a place for technology in football that will enhance the experience and allow for more accurate decisions to be made by the match officials. I admit that technology will never replace the referee but some of the situations during the world cup where clearly the match officials made the wrong calls that changed the outcome of the game could have been avoided if technology played more of a role in the decision making process. The two most relevant examples being the England goal that should have been and the infamous hand ball by Suarez…I would be very interested to hear your opinion David?
    Thanks & Regards,
    Matt
